On 14-16 July 2015, Beacon School Initiative (BSI), which is supported by OakTree Foundation, held a skills training at Skun High School in Chhoeurng Prey district, Kampong Cham province. The trainers, who were the volunteers from Australia, were welcomed to share their experiences, skills and knowledge during the project summer camp to 35 selected target school students. This program was focusing on Leadership, Public Speaking, Debate, Goal Setting and Campaign in order to promote the students’ personal understanding, knowledge and skills especially the skills of public speaking, good leading, debating, setting goals and campaigning in their local areas.

The trainers including Ms. Emma, Ms. Shrena and Ms. Chaitlin, who were invited by Oaktree Foundation, got touching and happy inspiration to help strengthen Cambodian students to learn new things from them. They provided the playing game called “Human Knot”, leadership definitions, types and why the leadership was important?

All the students learned new things including, ways to work in groups, what to do when they would become a leader if they faced problems in their school or community. Group discussion, role play and presentation were added to their current studies during summer camp because the students have known more than the past. They were provided more examples related to leadership, debate, public speaking, goal setting and campaign.

In addition, the trainers gave them the space of opportunity to present and raise their problems to discuss in groups especially the goal setting, campaign. They were divided into groups to brainstorm ideas and key issues in their school and community. They knew new ideas of what to do when they would become leaders.

The students were asked to think about what could motivate them to achieve the goal. After that, individual work to think about their goal and set the plan to achieve it by using SMART style (ex: who, what, where and when). At the end of the session, they were presenting and playing games.

In conclusion, all the students felt very inspired and happy because they got improved after they joined three days of BSI summer camp. They promised to use this knowledge and new skills to apply for their daily living and improving their studies. They thanked KAPE who facilitated for Australian volunteers to share good things to them. They suggested to have more skills in the following years.
