In an era where technology is advancing at an unstoppable pace, the Improving Digital Education for All Learners (IDEAL) has emerged as a beacon of hope for Cambodia’s children and education. Far more than just a project to enhance infrastructure, IDEAL is igniting creativity and equipping students with digital skills to prepare them as the leaders of tomorrow. Among its many impactful activities, the project recently conducted a field monitoring visit focusing on the school building renovations and the digital tool usages at three target schools including Rakakong 2 Primary School, Prek Dambang Secondary School and Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Dach High School in Kandal Province. This significant field monitoring visit took place on March 13, 2025, bringing together a vibrant group of representatives from ChildFund Korea, IDEAL project donor included Mr. Jeakyun Rho, Country Director, Ms. Prum Phaldin, Program Quality Assurance Officer and Ms. Kong Somonicheat, Senior Program Officer. Joining them were members of the project team from KAPE, who played a crucial role in facilitating between the schools and ChildFund Korea, as well as preparing detailed reports on the project progress and challenges. The enthusiastic participation of all parties showcased a united determination to propel Cambodia’s children and youth education toward modernity and sustainability.

This field monitoring visit was designed with two primary objectives in mind. First, it aimed to assess the progress of renovating school buildings, which are being transformed into state-of-the-art computer labs and 21st century-based libraries. These facilities are modeled after the 21st-century library concept, a successful initiative inspired by Cambodia’s New Generation School Initiative. These libraries are not just spaces for reading books — they are modern learning hubs equipped with cutting-edge technology to facilitate research and study. Second, the program sought to evaluate the use of digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI) in education, emphasizing the training of school principals, teachers, and students to use these technologies effectively and responsibly.

As a groundbreaking and ambitious initiative, the IDEAL project is bringing remarkable changes to its target schools. The creation of modern computer labs and libraries is more than a physical upgrade — it’s an opportunity to open new doors for students, aligning their education with national and international standards. The field monitoring visit also focused on identifying challenges, such as resource shortages or teachers’ technical skills gaps, and finding practical solutions to ensure the project’s smooth implementation and success throughout the 2025 academic year and beyond.

The IDEAL project has been underway since April 2024. This Quarter 1 2025 monitoring visit follows upon the December 2024 visit, which focused on physical renovations of ICT labs and libraires. This visit also shifts focus to the operationalization and readiness of schools to utilize facilities.

Spanning three years (2024–2026), the IDEAL project targets a total of 12 schools in Kandal Province and Phnom Penh, delivering interventions in both infrastructure and digital skills training. These schools are being equipped with modern computer labs featuring contemporary furniture, tablets for student use, research computers, high-speed internet, and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable learning environment. Additionally, the libraries are designed with aesthetic appeal, organized bookshelves, and digital tools that allow students to easily access online resources.

This transformation has turned schools that once struggled with outdated infrastructure and limited resources into vibrant centers of modern education. Previously, these schools lacked proper libraries, computers, or internet access, and their learning environments were far from conducive to study. Now, with IDEAL’s support, they’ve undergone a complete makeover, inspiring students to dive deeper into learning and explore the world through technology.

The visit did more than just elevate educational quality—it fosters strong bonds between schools, partner organizations, and local communities. It has helped parents and local authorities recognize the value of digital education, encouraging them to play a more active role. The dedication of school principals, teachers, and students left the ChildFund Korea representatives deeply impressed, earning heartfelt praise for their commitment and effort. This collective enthusiasm has sparked a powerful community movement, ensuring the sustainable development of these three schools.

Mr. Chan Sok, the principal of Rakakong 2 Primary School, shared his inspiring message: "The IDEAL project has transformed our school by providing a modern library, tablets for students to engage in digital learning, and cutting-edge equipment that meets today’s standards. We are overjoyed beyond words, never imagining that a partner organization would step in to elevate our development—especially with the stunning new library design, Smart TVs, computers for student research, and internet connectivity." He continued with heartfelt gratitude, "On behalf of the Rakakong 2 Primary School management team, I extend our deepest thanks to ChildFund Korea, through KAPE, for visiting us today, monitoring our progress, and offering valuable recommendations. As principal, together with all our teachers, we pledge to make the most of these resources with unwavering dedication, for the bright future of our children and generations to come."

Beyond the classroom, IDEAL empowers students to plan their futures by equipping them with digital and AI skills—essential tools in the 21st century. They’re encouraged to excel in their studies and choose career paths that meet today’s job market demands, preparing them to compete on a national and global stage.

Before IDEAL’s intervention, these three schools faced numerous challenges. Their libraries were disorganized, lacked proper shelving, and offered no technological tools like smart TVs or computers. Internet access was nonexistent, and the library environments were neither clean nor inviting, discouraging students from engaging in reading or research. Computer labs were virtually unheard of. Today, thanks to IDEAL, these schools have been reborn. Libraries now boast beautiful designs, modern furnishings, and digital resources, sparking students’ curiosity and love for learning.

The newly established computer labs are equally impressive, featuring high-speed internet, sleek new desks and chairs, glossy tiled floors, bright glass windows that let in natural light, and air conditioning for comfort. These changes have made teaching and learning more effective and aligned with modern standards, giving students access to up-to-date knowledge that meets global benchmarks.

Mr. Khon Sokha, the principal of Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Dach High School, expressed his delight, saying, "I am truly overjoyed that the IDEAL project has helped establish a computer room equipped with computers, internet access, tiled flooring, fans, and air conditioning, providing comfort to both students and teachers. Most notably, the renovation and creation of a modern library, designed in the style of a 21st-century library, stand out as remarkable achievements."

As these schools unveiled their new look, principals and teachers expressed overwhelming joy and optimism. They requested additional training from the project to enhance teachers’ technical skills in managing libraries, teaching with digital tools, and assessing student progress. Once teachers master these technologies, they’ll pass this knowledge on to future generations, marking the beginning of a broader transformation in Cambodian education.

To keep the libraries and computer labs in top condition, school administrators have pledged to maintain them diligently while educating students on their value and proper use. Instilling this sense of responsibility from a young age will shape students into conscientious citizens. Moreover, the renovations and equipment provided by IDEAL have breathed new life into these schools, turning once-quiet, under-resourced spaces into dynamic hubs of learning filled with activity.

This transformation has not only won praise from partner organizations but also captured the hearts of parents and local authorities, who are now stepping up to contribute. Many parents have voluntarily started monthly donations to the schools, hoping their children will receive a quality education and eager to see these institutions thrive. This support has forged a strong community spirit, ensuring the schools’ long-term success and boosting their reputation in the local and national levels.

The IDEAL project has become a grand dream for Cambodian children and youth, offering them a pathway to a brighter future through digital education. The unwavering commitment of these three schools, paired with robust stakeholder support, has made them a shining example—one that could inspire other schools across Cambodia to follow suit. With continued effort and dedication, IDEAL promises to elevate Cambodia’s education system to new heights, preparing students to become invaluable assets to their nation in the years ahead.
