Khmer Digital Literacy Programme equips students with practical knowledge
Date : 2024-10-16Mr.Chhin Sovannika, a Master Trainer of the Khmer Digital Literacy Programme (KDLP) and a teacher at Samdech Akka Moha Thamma Pothisal Chea Sim Prek Anchanh High School - New Generation School, located in Kandal Province. He took part in the Khmer Digital Literacy Programme (KDLP) resources pilot in February 2024, aiming to enhance his understanding of digital literacy and due to the significant role technology plays in modern life, particularly in the educational sector.
He has taught grade 9 students for four hours per week. KDLP is linked to their actual daily living needs. For instance, Today’s world, information sharing on social media negatively impacts society. If we share fake news, it will cause trouble for both of us and people's surroundings. Since participating in the programme, students have been oriented towards utilizing digital tools responsibly and effectively, especially distinguishing between fake and real news through what they have learned.
The students have gained insightful knowledge from the programme such as knowing about internet and its usage, being aware of using secure internet-connected devices and knowing how to do more research on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram). Additionally, they develop a deeper understanding of the ethical aspects of social media usage.
While teaching, the challenge that he encountered was that slide lessons consisted of key terms that needed to be clarified for the students to grasp. He, therefore, has done more research to get sources of information further to explain those words easily. Meanwhile, KDLP offered technical support in teaching, including lesson plans, teacher textbooks, slide lessons, and reflective workshops to deal with various issues.
“KDLP is beneficial for students to enhance their learning, promote awareness of responsible social media use, and be careful to share news through online platforms.”, said Mr. Sovannika. He emphasized that “students also discerned their digital identities and reputations. To become responsible digital citizens, they must decide which information, images, or videos to share on social media platforms. Moreover, students were aware of setting up accounts, crafting robust passwords, and safeguarding their online activities when utilizing public Wi-Fi or the Internet. “
Last but not least, he kindly suggests to KDLP that the project should have two or three video instructions to root for the lesson over the slide lesson and revise on key terms to compromise in teaching for betterment.
Horng Jinghor, a grade 9 student at Samdech Akka Moha Thamma Pothisal Chea Sim Prek Anchanh High School, is one of the project beneficiaries and expressed, "KDLP made me more understanding about using social media safely, and the lessons that I am more interested in passwords as it enhances the security of my account. Previously, I used simple passwords without considering digital security. This programme has enlightened me on safeguarding my online information effectively, distinguishing between fact and fake news." With a fresh smile, he added, "I will continue to share this knowledge with my friends and family members to ensure the safe use of digital, and I will share real news with specific sources of information with them.”
Ou Suya said, "KDLP is crucial and beneficial for me as it enhances my understanding of digital platforms like Facebook and Instagram so that I can use them more securely. Conversely, I have become aware of the lack of security in public internet connections; previously, I would connect without hesitation.”
KDLP is funded by Meta to help build the skills we need to create responsible digital citizens—critical thinking, empathy, and digital discourse. KDLP aimed to rationalize and improve the ICT curriculum for lower secondary levels in New Generation Schools (NGS).
