Improved Employability of Better Skilled Youth in Cambodia and for Work-Migranting Youth Project (BMZ/REACH) proudly organized a highly significant and impactful training course titled "Primary School Library Management", held at the modern meeting hall of the Preah Soramarith High School Resource Building in Kampong Chhnang Province. This training aimed to equip librarians, teachers, and relevant stakeholders in the education sector with foundational knowledge and practical skills to ensure that primary school libraries operate efficiently and become the heart of education, fostering knowledge acquisition and enhancing the quality of life for students.

The training offered a rich and comprehensive curriculum, focusing on developing library management skills and elevating the role of libraries within the educational landscape. Key topics covered included:

Library Management and Leadership: Participants were introduced to modern techniques in library management, including organizing books, establishing borrowing and returning systems, and designing engaging reading activities to capture students’ interest.

Practical Application: Trainees participated in hands-on activities, such as cataloging books, managing library documentation, and organizing reading programs for students, enabling them to apply their newfound skills directly at their respective schools.

Encouragement for Implementation at Target Schools: The course inspired participants to commit to applying their knowledge to transform libraries at their target schools into vibrant educational hubs that positively impact students.

The Role and Importance of Libraries: Participants explored the critical functions of libraries in promoting reading habits and intellectual development among students, as well as the responsibilities of librarians in sparking inspiration and a passion for learning.

Four Key Reading Activities: The training introduced four essential reading activities that foster an enjoyable reading environment, with participants engaging in role-playing exercises to build confidence and proficiency in leading these activities.

Activity Planning: Trainees learned to develop specific action plans with clear objectives to ensure that libraries operate effectively and serve the broader learning community.

Ms. Chhim Phalleak, a librarian at Sophoin Kiri Primary School and a participant in the BMZ/REACH project, shared a profound perspective: “A library is not merely a place to store books; it is the heart of education, providing an ideal environment for reading and research. Cultivating reading habits and skills is a crucial step in building the intellectual capacity of every student. Through effective library management, we can help students expand their knowledge, foster a love for reading, and gain opportunities for personal development toward a brighter future. This work requires continuous encouragement and commitment from all stakeholders.

The BMZ/REACH Project has a bold vision to enhance the quality of primary education and provide opportunities for vulnerable children and youth to access high-quality education. The project collaborates closely with various stakeholders, including local communities, territorial authorities, provincial offices of education, youth, and sport, and partner organizations working in the education sector. Through this collaboration, the project aims to increase access to education and vocational skills, enabling youth to secure decent employment and improve their quality of life in the future.

The training took place on December 13, 2024, with the participation of 30 trainees from 12 target schools in Kampong Chhnang and Pursat provinces. The project received financial support from WeWorld, the German organization Chalphan, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Through these collective efforts, the project aspires to create a positive impact on Cambodia’s education sector, empowering the next generation of children with a brighter future filled with opportunities and capabilities.
